What Was The First Rock Or Metal Album You Bought & How Did It Influence Your Taste In Music?

So I think I need to first of all mention that this was not the first album that I got that I wanted. I asked for American Idiot by Green Day for Christmas. But this question is about the album that I personally bought.

Fall Out Boy – American Idiot (All Rights Are Retained By Fall Out Boy)

That honour goes to Fall Out Boy “Infinity On High”. I was sat painting figurines (Nerdy I know) in a local store when “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race” came on over the speaker. I was hooked!

I ran out the shop straight to the CD store and bought a copy then and there, I was so grateful when I found all the other songs excellent too! In fact to this day it is still one of my favourite albums. You should also check out “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs”.

In terms of how it has influenced my taste going forward it was like a gateway into all things Emo , which is a firm favourite style/subgenre of mine. It opened my eyes to bands like 30 Seconds To Mars and My Chemical Romance.

It’d love to know your own first album that you bought and how its changed your musical journey in the comments section!

The first album I bought with my very own money was Born to Run by the Boss. To this day, it’s my favorite album of all time. It’s simply a perfect album, not a bad song in the bunch.I think I was 11.

Sounds like it was the perfect album to come out at that period of time then! 🙂

Mine was Garbage “Only Happy When it Rains.” I had a darkened childhood, that album helped I guess. My favorite song was, “Stupid Girl.” Bush “Sixteen Stone,” was also a favorite.

I think the very first rock album I bought with my own money was Breakfast in America by Supertramp. Wish I still had that vinyl.

I can’t exactly remember the first album I bought but the first one I copied, Abbey Road by The Beatles, from cassette to cassette.
The first album may have been The Beach Boys, but I don’t remember for sure. I saw them in concert, at the arts center where Brian Wilson went to.
I grew up listening to the music my ma listened to as a kid. She had a ton of vinyl, Rolling Stones, The Beatles and stuff from Motown.
My father listened to groups like The Everly Brothers or Buddy Holly.
My older brothers listened to 80’s rock (Van Halen) and my sister listened to top 40’s (Village People).
The first time I heard classic rock, as I know it, like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix, I was hooked.
My taste in rock music has not changed much, I like ‘old funk, new punk, it’s still rock n roll to me;’ a wiseman once said.
I will listen to Blues or funky old soul, punk, grunge, glam, heavy metal and whatever else; as long as it is rock!

“A Quick One (Happy Jack)” by The Who. It opened up a whole vista of music for me, leading to purchases like “Out of Our Heads” by the Stones, “Are You Experienced” by Jimi Hendrix, and “Led Zeppelin” by Led Zeppelin. Eventually, I found my way to David Bowie, which changed the trajectory of my listening to New Wave and Post Punk. It has been quite a ride!

I wonder with you being such a big Bowie fan have you heard of Gyasi? We are interviewing him tomorrow and I’d say he is the perfect blend of Bowie and T-rex!

Some Girls was my first. It influenced me to buy the whole rolling stones catalog through the years and got me into the blues that they were inspired by.

I bought ‘Paranoid’ by Black Sabbath as my first album when I was about 14. I had a Saturday job in a record shop at the time, so was surrounded by a smorgasbord of great music, this being the early 70s. I could have bought so many albums as my 1st, but I guess the minor key and dark themes appealed to me most. I went on to buy many other of those great albums, and developed a wide taste in all kinds of music. 😎

Oh wow what a 1st album that is! 🙂

Working in a record shop must have helped so much to know all the cool new stuff!

Yes, and the customers who bought the albums were a mine of information too. Later I dated a guy who worked full-time in a record shop, so found even more great sounds. 😎

Absolutely. It was so great! My boyfriend and his co-worker specialised in finding all the new sounds and checking them out. Thus we were into Steely Dan before they became very well known. Golden days! 🙂

Mine was Kiss by Kiss. I was 8, and I bought it off a standing record rack in a Sears department store. My tastes have changed greatly since then, but I still think it is one of the best hard rock albums.

Life experience. I’ve had a lot of access to all types of music over the years, and I’ve always been inquisitive and had an open mind. Music is like food. Try it all and be amazed!

I bought Ozzy’s solo album entitled “The Blizzard of Ozz.” I spent a few days re-spinning that marvel. That album led me into Sabbath and that lead me to the store to purchase more. Accidentally, I saw a Judas Priest album or two in the search and bought those as well. From there, I willfully jumped into the Metal well, plummeting its depths, and I’m still there.

First bought, was Pat Benatar, the voice and sound just grabbed me, I went into Boston and Super Tramp from there and evolved into the REO Speedwagon, Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac etc… 80s & 90s stuck to the Big Hair Bands, wasn’t much of a Pop or Country fan yet.

Well see now I’m gonna show my age!! I was almost 12 and I had money saved up for all of my good grades and I went to the mall and hit up Sam Goody to buy the cassette tape of Nevermind and the Purple Rain soundtrack. I was tired of trying to record the songs from the radio and bit the bullet to buy it. That started my music obsession and it’s only grown since 1991! 😛
