New Rock Roundup Vol 10

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

Follow the playlist!

New Rock Roundup

Rock

The Black Keys – A Little Too High.

This is about as chilled out as rock gets. It is not all about hitting the drums as hard as you can you know… The laid back bluesy undernotes in this song are excellent too.

The Black Keys – A Little Too High (All Rights Are Retained By The Black Keys)

Special Mention: Wolf Alice – White Horses.

Metal

Hyro The Hero – Black Rambo.

This dude features on our interview with The Blackout from earlier today! But this is obviously a much more recent song… This wont be to everyone’s taste, but I find myself rather enjoying the rap like lyrics. Especially when accompanied with thunderous drum beats.

Hyro The Hero – Black Rambo (All Rights Are Retained By Hyro The Hero)

Special Mention: Attack Attack! – Karmageddon.

Metalcore

Villain Of The Story – Blow Me Away.

Anyone doing a cover of a Breaking Benjamin song is going to get my undivided attention! The clean vocals might not be as good as the original but by gosh do the harsh vocals provide something new to the song. A cool reinterpretation!

Villain Of The Story – Blow Me Away (All Rights Are Retained By Villain Of The Story)

Special Mention: Void:Embrace – Abyssal.

Punk

Free The Witness – Carpetbomb!.

What I enjoy about punk is that it takes so many different forms! This band reminds me a little of Rise Against! Somewhat unpolished in parts but a really meaningful song… Who wants a polished punk song anyways.

Free The Witness – Carpetbomb! (All Rights Are Retained By Free The Witness)

Special Mention: Splitcast – Between The Fire And The Damned.

Pop Punk

Everway – 29.

What a voice! Honestly this is a beautiful song and has some real heartfelt lyrics too. Lyrically it reminds me of some of the softer songs by Nickleback. That is no bad thing!

Everway – 29 (All Rights Are Retained By Everway)

Special Mention: Faded Polaroids – Burning Paradise.

Alternative

Sombr – 12 To 12.

This weeks playlist is looking really damn strange, genres not being genres and all that. But this is about as alt as you get. Its got a really funky vibe to it and its one that I think people are going to enjoy!

Sombr – 12 To 12 (All Rights Are Retained By Sombr)

Special Mention: Stone – Never Again.

Indie

The K’s – Rat Poison.

Now this is indie! It would have fit right in at the recent festival we reviewed… I really enjoy the sound these guys generate, and the song title made me laugh as I couldnt work out how they were going to fit it in. An interesting one to watch…

The K’s – Rat Poison (All Rights Are Retained By The K’s)

Special Mention: The Clause – Elisha.

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: Everway

2nd Place: The Black Keys

3rd Place: The K’s

4th Place: Free The Witness

5th Place: Villain Of The Story

6th Place: 12 To 12

7th Place: Hyro The Hero

Let us know if you agree with the ranking and the comments about each song!

Any punk is ok in my book, I think that pop punk genre is what’s the norm for me, having cut my teeth on Dookie and Enema of the State along with early Sex Pistols influences… (my foster bro Dave had the Bollocks album.) So, and as for polished punk? I prefer mine unpolished* 😀

I really enjoyed Villain in the Story & The K’s. Despite being an alt girl, it wasn’t really my jam.

Thats alright , we cant all like everything 😀

I’m glad you enjoyed a couple of the songs, what do you think to the playlist as a whole?

Overall I liked it. The 2 I mentioned were my favorites but most of others are good. They weren’t necessarily up my alley but I liked’em enough to listen all the way through, which isn’t something I’m always willing to do. New songs get me out of my comfort zone and force me to analyze why I don’t like them (if I don’t) or why I’m drawn to them so I always appreciate it.

        Almost always.

It is all about finding what we don’t like so that we may find more that we do! 🙂
