From The Archives: 80s Vol 2 – Van Halen – 1984

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss a classic rock album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful. This album is a perfect example of hard rock in the 80s.

The Album Breakdown

This album from 1984 is easily one of the most recognisable and iconic records of the 1980’s. The bands 6th studio album (and final with original singer David Lee Roth well until 2012!). I think this album blends excellent guitars but with a radio ready feel to it all.

The huge hooks means that it bridged the often tricky gap from rock into popular culture. The MTV generation ate this up! For a hard rock band their use of synths quite early on gave this particular album at the time something completely different. I think this is the best album from the band if I am being completely honest. This really is MTV era rock.

If I was to pick out a couple of flaws I feel the album ends too quickly. It stands at just over 30 minutes and I always feel they could have squeezed a couple more tracks in. There isn’t as much as a full band experience on this one it is starting to feel like the Eddie Van Halen show.

Highlight Tracks

Jump

This is the band’s biggest hit so its always going to be a clear and obvious highlight track! It is also their only number one hit to top the billboard hot 100. The synth riff really did redefine the rock/pop fusion to its extreme. While the guitar solo reminded anyone foolish to forget that Eddie still had it! This song can be heard in sports stadiums the world over, it has legendary status. As it should…

Hot For Teacher

I think this song really shows off the bands fun side, with high energy to go along with it. The drum solo at the start of this song is absolutely insane, blazing riffs and over-the-top vocals make this a work of art. Let’s face it that music video is iconic too! Man I love Eddie Van Halen guitar solos.

Closing Thoughts

1984 isn’t just another record — it’s a classic rock album that defined MTV era rock. Its high-energy riffs, unforgettable hooks, and legendary Eddie Van Halen guitar solos set a new standard for hard rock in the 80s. Which track is your favourite from this legendary record?

As metalheads in the 80s, hearing the synthesizers on this album sent us into fanatical debates on whether they “sold out” or not, but in the end, it turned out to be a pretty good album.

I can totally see why many would have had that viewpoint to be honest! But I think in the end it produced one hell of an effect and album! 🙂

Quick question: In the writeup for “Jump,” you said, “It is also their only hit on the billboard hot 100.” Did you mean to say that it was their only number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100?

Alex Van Halen is a beast on this album. (actually all of there albums). AVH’s drums during EVH’s solo on ‘Girl Gone Bad’ are like a locomotive coming off the tracks. For the record I’m not a drummer haha but when your brother is the King of the 6 string you may get overlooked….

You know what you’re absolutely right! Although if you’re looking for the most talented of the bunch suprisingly I’ll go for Eddie’s Son Wolfgang! That dude can play everything

Eddie as well. He played bass on Hagar 87 solo album and supposedly played the drums on a bunch of tracks on VH III according to that records producer Mike Post. I will add Wolf has a way better voice then Ed as Ed did the lead vocal on How Many Say I on that release.
