New Rock Roundup Vol 23

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Kings Of Leon – To Space.

Man do Kings Of Leon have a really distinctive sound! This is no different with those magnetic vocals that keep people coming back for more. I would not say this is going to be a mammoth hit like some of their back catalogue, but I’ll never turn down new music from them.

Metal

Lord Of The Lost – Would You Walk With Me Through Hell.

What we have here is a prime example of why I need to stop writing bands off so early. Lord of the lost are a band that featured on Eurovision for Germany and to be honest I figured they were middle of the pack doing nothing out of the ordinary. However this song has proven to me that they have more emotional complexity, and a touch of theatre to them too! This feels like a heavier Meatloaf song, but I also adore the female vocals here too.

Metalcore

Northlane – Obelisk.exe.

This is much more than smash you in the face metalcore, it has this atmospheric expansive quality to it. Sure the harsh vocals let you know you have listen to them, but the high notes of the cleans are absolutely tremendous. With really heavy riffs this is going to end up being someone’s new favourite.

Northlane – Obelisk.exe (All Rights Are Retained By Northlane)

Punk

These New South Whales – Big Machine.

Not all punk has to be shout in your face about politics and all the crap stuff in the world. The Aussie band here bring forth a really uplifting feeling and as I am currently not very well I needed that! Shout out to the bass on this song.

These New South Whales – Big Machine (All Rights Are Retained By The New South Whales)

Pop Punk

Jimmy Eat World – Failure.

One of the best voices in rock. It has this fragile uniqueness to it. But here its the instruments that are the stars, with this real fuzzy guitar sound flowing throughout. This feels different to every other Jimmy Eat World song which is precisely why I picked it.

Jimmy Eat World – Failure (All Rights Are Retained By Jimmy Eat World)

Alternative

Marmozets – A Kiss From A Mother.

Marmozets! How I have missed this band… Carnage, vocal complexity tied up in a wonderful human. I was lucky enough to meet the band at Download Festival many years ago now which is how I know Becca is a Vegan. She was eating food during the meet and greet. After the band have taken some time away I honestly thought they were done. Thankfully they are back and if this song is anything to judge then they mean business!

Marmozets – A Kiss From A Mother (All Rights Are Retained By Marmozets)

Indie

Del Water Gap – Small Town Joan Of Arc.

This song would not work in any other genre other than Indie. This has a real melancholic spin of Indie rock that really speaks to me. It is light and bouncy, I should also mention the guitar and vocal work here is great too!

Del Water Gap – Small Town Joan Of Arc (All Rights Are Retained By Del Water Gap)
