This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
From the latter stages of the 80’s (1988) this is the bands landmark concept piece. It tells the politically charged story of manipulation, revolution and corruption. Some would consider this one of the best ever progressive metal albums and I don’t think I disagree.
Strengths
With it’s cinematic pacing, blend of heavy riffs and strong melodic hooks. It is impossible to not get drawn in. The vocal performance by Geoff Tate is amazing it adds real depth to the story they are telling.
Weaknesses
As with all concept albums some tracks are more of a narrative piece than songs that can standalone. The production could now be viewed as somewhat dated when compared to modern day standards.
Highlight Tracks
The introduces the albums theme of political deceit with a beat that is sharp as a knife and drives the song forward. The commanding vocals with the tight instrumentals make this a song that can be enjoyed outside of the concept album.
The closer of the album reflects on the protagonists identity and how it has become fractured. It has melodies that soar in the clouds but yet has this real dark feel to it.
