From The Archives: 80s Vol 4 – Queensryche – Operation: Mindcrime

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

From the latter stages of the 80’s (1988) this is the bands landmark concept piece. It tells the politically charged story of manipulation, revolution and corruption. Some would consider this one of the best ever progressive metal albums and I don’t think I disagree.

Strengths

With it’s cinematic pacing, blend of heavy riffs and strong melodic hooks. It is impossible to not get drawn in. The vocal performance by Geoff Tate is amazing it adds real depth to the story they are telling.

Weaknesses

As with all concept albums some tracks are more of a narrative piece than songs that can standalone. The production could now be viewed as somewhat dated when compared to modern day standards.

Highlight Tracks

The introduces the albums theme of political deceit with a beat that is sharp as a knife and drives the song forward. The commanding vocals with the tight instrumentals make this a song that can be enjoyed outside of the concept album.

Queensryche – Revolution Calling (All Rights Are Retained By Queensryche)

The closer of the album reflects on the protagonists identity and how it has become fractured. It has melodies that soar in the clouds but yet has this real dark feel to it.

Queensryche – Eyes Of A Stranger (All Rights Are Retained By Queensryche)

Oh, man, I played the hell out of this album when it first came out. Loved the concept, the music, the lyrics. Like you note, some of the songs don’t really stand on their own because they are part of a narrative, but others definitely do. “The Needle Lies” is fantastic.

Yeah I like concept albums in general but I see why others don’t

This is a fantastic concept albums, and it’s one of my favorites. I got to see the band perform this entire album live when I saw them during the Building Empires tour in 1992. Going to that show was one of the highlights of my teen years.

Yeah, this is a good ‘un. Trying to think of this was the first concept album I heard – it definitely came before The Wall in my personal discography, so maybe?

True fact: the copy I inherited from my brother was a bootleg cassette and, like all bootleg cassettes, it didn’t fit neatly. So my brother (or possibly the person he copied it off – it was a lawless age) put a song by Colourbox at the end of side one. I’m led to believe that this track was either The Official Colourbox World Cup Song or its b-side Philip Glass (1986). Now, two things: first, what animal puts a foreign song in the middle of another album – especially an album such as this? And second… I didn’t even notice. If you know Colourbox you’ll be aware that their thing was instrumental electronics. In my ignorance I thought it was just Queensryche going a bit experimental around track 10.

    So yeah. Memories
