This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful. Today we look at Help! By The Beatles.
The Album Breakdown
Released in 1965, not only in the middle of the decade but also at the heart of Beatlemania, Help! was a massive step forward for The Fab Four. While on the surface level the album is bright and packed with huge hooks. The album’s deeper core shows a band beginning to grow up as musicians.
This was the real shift, with sharper songwriting, stronger emotion and a real sense of ambition. Lennon for example peels back the layers and McCartney’s melodic side really comes into its own. The energy levels, however, remain the same from their earlier work, but the first signs of the maturity that would later define their career are starting to show.
The issue I do however have with this album is that a few of the soundtrack focused tracks don’t hit the same dizzy heights as the bigger, more well-known singles. You can obviously still enjoy them though!
Highlight Tracks
That urgency on Lennon’s vocals is the reason why this is the number one track for me. It creates real tension and feels honest. The undertone of vulnerability hiding beneath that upbeat tempo makes this one of The Beatles‘ more powerful tracks. Catchy yet emotionally raw, something bands really struggle to translate into sound.
This is in complete contrast to the song above! It highlights the reflective and delicate side of the group. The wonderful arrangement shows they don’t need to create a lot of sound to make something people will never forget.
This song is a great example of the band’s ability to really layer vocals. A tighter sound, yet at the same time broody and full of experimentation!
