From The Archives: 60s Vol 7 – The Beatles – Help!

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful. Today we look at Help! By The Beatles.

The Album Breakdown

Released in 1965, not only in the middle of the decade but also at the heart of Beatlemania, Help! was a massive step forward for The Fab Four. While on the surface level the album is bright and packed with huge hooks. The album’s deeper core shows a band beginning to grow up as musicians.

This was the real shift, with sharper songwriting, stronger emotion and a real sense of ambition. Lennon for example peels back the layers and McCartney’s melodic side really comes into its own. The energy levels, however, remain the same from their earlier work, but the first signs of the maturity that would later define their career are starting to show.

The issue I do however have with this album is that a few of the soundtrack focused tracks don’t hit the same dizzy heights as the bigger, more well-known singles. You can obviously still enjoy them though!

Highlight Tracks

That urgency on Lennon’s vocals is the reason why this is the number one track for me. It creates real tension and feels honest. The undertone of vulnerability hiding beneath that upbeat tempo makes this one of The Beatles‘ more powerful tracks. Catchy yet emotionally raw, something bands really struggle to translate into sound.

The Beatles – Help! (All Rights Are Retained By The Beatles)

This is in complete contrast to the song above! It highlights the reflective and delicate side of the group. The wonderful arrangement shows they don’t need to create a lot of sound to make something people will never forget.

The Beatles – Yesterday (All Rights Are Retained By The Beatles)

This song is a great example of the band’s ability to really layer vocals. A tighter sound, yet at the same time broody and full of experimentation!

The Beatles – Ticket To Ride (All Rights Are Retained By The Beatles)

Other Notable Albums From The Band

Abbey Road

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Revolver

Of course, the US Help album had 7 songs, plus 5 movie instruments. The UK Help had 14 songs; the other 7 songs ended up on Beatles VI, Rubber Soul, and Yesterday and Today.

I was not confused. But the US LPs and CDs were different animals. https://www.rogerogreen.com/2012/03/06/h-is-for-help/

Huge Macca fan here. (Ofc right??) We had the album Help in our classroom in the 3rd grade and we must have worn out the vinyl absolutely thin… it was that beloved. ^^ Mostly by me; the youngest Apple scruff in existence atm. 😛

This was the first album, I ever bought. It was mono.. I don’t have Spotify so not sure what tracks you referenced. However, stand outs for me are; You’ve got to hide your love away; I’ve just seen a face; The night before; and, Tell me what you see. Overall the album, for me, was the first time I enjoyed the Beatles. They upped their game in this one.

You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away gets another vote from me! Yes, an underrated album with some great tracks on it. I also love the film – some amazing Beatles-based-banter and very British humour, though not all of it has aged well

I enjoy the film more than the album! 😛

It is a great film. Lovely surreal touches, like their shared house and the completely unrelated football stadium bursting into Ode to Joy. Also the Beatles being incredibly funny. Just a shame about the Indian stereotyping (if not outright racism) and brownface.

Just checking the tracklisting and yeah, I can see where you’re coming from. I remembered the highlights (which were, to be fair, pretty high) but there’s a ladleful of filler there too.

I do love the film, though. It inspired the original Batman and the Monkees and exists in the same continuum as Monty Python

Yeah I get the racism talk, it’s one of those things where I think we should not look back and judge things based on todays standards though. The filler is still good, but yeah its filler 🙂

You’ve got to hide your love away was the B side to the Help single IIRC.

Great take on the album. It’s making me want to make a deeper dive on it and the movie.

I’m one of those people who puts the Beatles on another plane of musical greatness, so to see you list Abbey Rd., Sgt.. Pepper, and Revolver as “other notable albums by The Beatles“ made me chuckle a little.

I mean, how many bands wouldn’t kill to have at least one album become half as big as any of those three were?
