A-Z Of Rock: E Part 2

Welcome to our weekly alphabet themed rock post! In this post we will talk about a specific letter of the alphabet and associate it with all things rock music!

This will include a band with that letter, a song as well as a rocker. There is an accompanying playlist so that the selected songs can be enjoyed! Click the Spotify link below and remember to save it!

Band

There is nothing wrong with a bit of post-punk gloom and doom. Especially when it is framed in this way. Echo & The Bunnymen have a Door-esque feel to them with a psyche twang I think you will love.

Echo & The Bunnymen – The Killing Moon (All Rights Are Retained By Echo & The Bunnymen)

Song

So I first heard this song on the film School Of Rock. Where the schools principle is a massive fan! From that moment on so was I. I even used to have this on my gaming playlist, an honour that is hard to achieve. It’s also a great film btw so if you haven’t checked out the Jack Black classic please do!

Stevie Nicks – Edge Of Seventeen (All Rights Are Retained By Stevie Nicks)

Rocker

Elton Freakin John! The artist I wish I had bought a ticket to go and see before he called quits on his live performances. This was always my favourite for the attitude. Elton is a legend, and his biopic was incredible and a MUST WATCH!

Elton John – Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) (All Rights Are Retained By Elton John)

Being an Elton John fan made me think you might be older but discovering Age of Seventeen through a soundtrack confused my theory 😄

Haha! I see the confusion entirely and it makes sense. I have a really odd love of music new and old but the classics are the classics 🙂

That is honestly the best kind of taste. You never know what will speak to your soul 🙂

AC/DC A Long Way To The Top sticks out as well as when 2 of the kids were arguing over best drummers ( I, personally love drummers 😂) and I agreed that White Stripes was better ~ which to answer your previous anthem post Seven Nation Army is a great anthem one too 😂

Great selection! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is one of my all time favorite albums. “Gray Seal”, “This Song Has No Title”, “Harmony” (I lean towards the lesser known songs on that one).

Do you know the story behind “Edge of Seventeen”? Apparently, Stevie has been friends with Tom Petty for decades and was friendly with this first wife, who was his high school sweetheart. They were talking one day and Stevie asked her when they met. Being from Central Florida and having a bit of a Southern twang (I live near there so I’m aware of it), she replied, “We met at the age of seventeen”. Stevie misheard her and thought she said, “Edge of seventeen”. She loved the sound of that and wrote the song. 🎶

The lesser known songs are probably unfairly lesser known in my opinion 🙂

I did not know that song but I really LOVE that story! 🙂

This entry in the A-Z series keeps the format light and personal without pretending to be exhaustive. The choices under E – Echo & The Bunnymen’s atmospheric post-punk, Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” with its film connection, and Elton John’s unapologetic rock swagger – sit together comfortably enough, though the thread feels more like a relaxed playlist conversation than a deep dive into craft or influence.

What comes across is genuine affection for the material rather than any attempt to position the selections as evolutionary markers. That restraint is welcome in a format that could easily tip into list-making for its own sake. The casual nods to how these tracks entered the author’s life (through films, gaming, regret over missed gigs) remind me how much rock still travels through shared, imperfect discovery rather than curated authority.

It will be interesting to see whether later letters tighten the focus or keep this amiable, anecdotal pace. Either way, the series continues to function as a gentle prompt to revisit tracks one might otherwise pass over.
