What Is The Best Song By Metallica

From the ashes of the weekly song poll rises “What Is The Best Song By”. A very similar segment where I want to know what your favourite song(s) by the selected artist is! You can let us know in the comments!

The best thing is that if you don’t know the artist then you can see both our recommendations as well as those by other people.

Fox’s Recommendations

I think this is from their best album, so it is only natural to me to think the best song from that album is their best song… It is genre defining! The clean intro that slowly builds into massive riffs, emotional lyrics makes it timeless. It’s melodic but never loses that heaviness that makes Metallica great.

Metallica – Fade To Black (All Rights Are Retained By Metallica)

I would say that this song defines the Thrash era, fast, aggressive and politically charged. It hits you like a bullet train! The razor sharp work on the guitar makes this sublime.

Metallica – Master Of Puppets (All Rights Are Retained By Metallica)

Fox’s Wildcard

This song shows a different side to the band a slower, darker and more atmospheric side. Tension builds before smashing into the heaviest of beats. It’s haunting and the music video is brilliant.

I actually think it’s the cover they did of “Am I Evil?”. Definitely a banger!

Metallica are one of those bands where I’ll give you a different answer every day. For Whom the Bell Tolls is up there. Sad But True too, and I really rate the whole Death Magnetic album. I think I’ve said before that I think Load and Reload are underrated; Carpe Diem Baby and Prince Charming (and Fixxxer, obs) from the latter, and Bleeding Me is the highlight of Load.

It’s interesting you say Ride the Lightning is their best album, as it’s the one that really didn’t grab me. I (by which I mean my brother) had it on two-disc vinyl, two tracks per side. The only one I cared for was side two. But I spent a lot of time listening to Metal Up Your Ass – sorry, Kill ’em All – and …Justice. One is a great song but it’s let down by the production the ruins the album as a whole.

Master of Puppets is class. No denying that. But I guess pure thrash, and then the technical prog-metal of …Justice never quite worked for me. Entirely personal, of course. But for me their best album is Death Magnetic

The best thing about music is that everyones ears are different 🙂 I think my top spot changes on a weekly basis, but 2 and 3 remain the same. It’s VERY odd.. I adore their cover of Die Die my darling for example.

OOOOH this is a tough one. They have so many great songs. I have to say, though I really love what they did with The San Francisco Orchestra.

I know that this is a controversial statement, and a lot of people who call themselves true Metallica fans dislike the Black Album and use it to separate the posers from the true fans… but I really like The Unforgiven (and I sing it at karaoke sometimes, although not all that often anymore because one of the other regulars does it too). I find the lyrics very relatable to my own life…

Yeah, maybe that’s why it stands out so much in the crowd of other really great tracks by them.
