A-Z Of Rock: N Part 2

Welcome to our weekly alphabet themed rock post! In this post we will talk about a specific letter of the alphabet and associate it with all things rock music!

This will include a band with that letter, a song as well as a rocker. There is an accompanying playlist so that the selected songs can be enjoyed! Click the Spotify link below and remember to save it!

Band

This damn song! I hear it once and then I have it on repeat for a week. I heard it on the radio this past weekend and now you are hearing it too… Enjoy!

Nothing But Thieves – Amsterdam (All Rights Are Retained By Nothing But Thieves)

Song

When I first heard this song I was confused. When did Don Broco get heavy and where was Nickelback. But it was clear that Nickelback were giving that trademark tone to the chorus and Don Broco were trying their hand at the heavier portions of the song. I like!

Don Broco & Nickelback – Nightmare Tripping (All Rights Are Retained By Don Broco & Nickelback)

Rocker

Neil Peart take a bow! Perhaps the best drummer to ever do it and the one reason why I even entertain Rush. Just don’t tell Cozzer I included Rush as he HATES them!

Rush – Limelight (All Rights Are Retained By Rush)

Rush is like a big bowl of mac ‘n’ cheese…comfort food for the ears. I enjoyed hearing this again.

“Limelight” has one of the best guitar solos of all time. Alex Lifeson puts so much emotion into it.

Hahaha, thank you for putting NBT on! I put this track on my daughter’s first ever compilation CD when she was six. Now she’s nine and listens to nothing but Taylor Swift, but I’m ready for the long game.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but NBT’s set from Party in the Park is free to watch on BBC iPlayer, so check that out. And I’ve just pre-ordered their new album, due out on September! Will you be catching them on tour?

Keeping my fingers crossed for some NMA action in A-Z of Rock: N part 3 in twenty-six weeks’ time ☺️

“Just one more thing,” he says in his best Colombo voice. The video for Amsterdam is amazing. I got into NBT when I was doing a lot of freelance editing, and there was this book I worked on where there was an ‘outside’ realm where to laws of physics didn’t apply. Now Amsterdam and this book are forever linked in my mind because of the way those dancers/performers move.

Ever thought of doing a regular feature on music videos, and how they support/enhance (or the opposite) the sound, the experience? I’d always point people at True Faith by New Order (an entry for A-Z: N part 4)

I love love love music videos, I have thought about it previously. To be honest I struggle at the best of times to keep up with as many features as I already have. BUT I wouldnt completely rule it out 🙂

I was wondering about this – how do you find the time to listen to all the new music, let alone write about it? How do you balance keeping up with the latest and catching up on old favourites – you know, actually enjoying the whole thing?

Haha well I have a very fprgiving wife who doesnt mind me listening to music pretty much all the time in the house. But I suffer from insomnia quite a bit. So often get things done at like 3am. My daughter is 2 years old and once I get her back to sleep I then end up awake for a bit.

Oh, bless you and bless her. I fear I’ve scarred my kids for life – my first was a terrible sleeper and I’d just sing to her for hours – not nursery rhymes, of course, just whatever songs I knew the words to. So Bowie featured heavily, also REM, Levellers, Ezio, New Model Army, and of course Richard Thompson’s ‘Sibella’, from which she got her middle name.

The younger one sleeps better, so it’s usually ‘Mysteries of the Unexplained’ by Tanya Donelly and ‘Beginning’ by NMA (but without the shout bit) and she’s down. I’ll add ‘Starman’ and Grinderman’s ‘Man in the Moon’ if more is needed as they have a nursery-rhymesque feel
