From The Archives: Jefferson Airplane – Surrealistic Pillow

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

In 1967 Surrealistic Pillow captured the psych movement that was growing at some pace! It blended together folk, rock and experimental sounds. They created one of the defining albums of the summer of love.

Grace Slick arrived on the scene to give the band a stronger and more distinctive voice. It elevated the songs beyond other bands at the time. Today the album remains a cornerstone release in psych rock.

Highlight Tracks

This is the bands most iconic song! Build around a hypnotic arrangement and delivered by Slick’s commanding vocals. It builds tension slowly before reaching a huge unforgettable finale.

Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit (All Rights Are Retained By Jefferson Airplane)

One of the biggest rock singles of all of the 60s! Somebody to love combines powerful vocals with an infectious energy. It somehow remains fresh to this day!

Jefferson Airplane – Somebody to Love (All Rights Are Retained By Jefferson Airplane)

The softer side of the album, it showcases the bands folk influences with a warm and heartfelt recording.

Somehow, there is a thread that weaves from this particularly good album such as this all the way down to the worst song ever recorded

    As we built this city.

Love this album, even though I didn’t get to experience it until a couple years after its release. Not sure why, but I was in high school before I first heard it. Grace Slick amazed. I think I wanted to be her at one point or at least wanted to possess her vocal ability.
