Song Of The Week – Cesar Sun – Tunacan

Song Background Information

Cesar Sun – Tunacan (All Rights Are Retained By Cesar Sun)

TUNACAN is a song that clearly follows in the footsteps of our previous single ‘Where Is The Wine?’. Like that track, the song plays with a vague, almost enigmatic symbolism that not only makes you want to move, but also invites you to pause and reflect for a moment. The inspiration for “Tunacan” comes from a period when a can of tuna was sometimes the only dinner available, and from that starting point it fiercely barks at our modern-day (over)consumption society.

In the verses and choruses, everything is mercilessly torn apart. Only in the bridge does space emerge to show another side of ourselves, where we let our psychedelic influences truly shine through for the first time.

TUNACAN feels – despite an initial, perhaps somewhat absurdist impression – like a powerhouse indictment of contemporary capitalist madness. Balancing between financial puppet strings and clinking cash register ka-chings, CESAR SUN seemingly rediscovers his peace of mind among the tuna cans.

However, there is no trace on the musical level of the economic fatigue that the lyrics exude. The track opens unbelievably strong with a standout drum fill that is soon joined by ominous fuzz guitars and a bass line that glues the entire arrangement together. The vocals manage to transform exhaustion into frustration, hurling the message straight at the listener without detours: “you need more money to need more money.” After the first chorus, a bass riff of impressive proportions follows—one that would spontaneously conjure an unprecedented stank face on the mug of many a musician.
