Download Festival 2026: Highlights and Review

Another year, and yet another pilgrimage to Donington Park for the UK’s biggest rock and metal festival. Download Festival 2026 arrived amongst plenty of expectation. Debuting Europes largest festival main stage to a headline set from the fresh lineup of Linkin Park. After 5 days of live music, very late nights and questionable amounts of walking… One thing became clear. Download is continuing to evolve while maintaining everything that makes it special.

Like any festival, it has it’s flaws. Organisational inconsistencies and a few moments that left people scratching their heads. But those issues were massively outweighed by excellent facilities, a strong line up and surprisingly great weather.

Packing for this festival was made extremely easy by using our own festival packing guide, one to bookmark for your own festivals! A special shout has to go to Loop Earplugs that I used throughout the festival both for the music and for sleeping.

A Festival That Keeps Growing

We arrived bright and early on Wednesday morning and made our way to Campervan Plus. Which is always one of the highlights of the weekend. Parking there was straight forward and the walk to both the arena and District X was short. Toilets and showers cleans throughout the event. Certainly giving festival-goers added comfort.

District X (Seriously just switch it back to being called the village) continues to expand every year and is now much more than a simple campsite entertainment area. With shops, bars, food, Co-op, merch stores, comedy tents. Not to mention the Doghouse tent and additional other stages providing entertainment into the early hours. There is now enough outside of the main arena to keep everybody very happy.

Wednesday carried that familiar festival excitement as thousands of rock fans settled in for the weekend ahead. Thursdays persistent rain threatened initially to dampen spirits but the packed schedule ensured the atmosphere steadily improved throughout the day.

A big success story on Thursday was the entertainment. Electric Six brought plenty of energy, Bat Sabbath delivered their unique Black Sabbath experience through the lens of Cancer Bats. But perhaps the weekends most unexpected success story was Five!

As Download’s wildcard booking there was curiosity surrounding the appearance. But they delivered and then some! The tent was rammed and nostalgic hit after hit was enjoyed. It was one of those Download moments that shouldn’t have worked but it really did. People were still talking about it on Sunday evening.

Weather Facilities and Value

After a wet start the weather was to my surprise unbelievably kind. So much so I left with sunburn on Friday! The weekend itself was so dry that there was still grass left to sit on by Sunday which every Download veteran knows is unusual.

I think facilities throughout the site were the best they have ever been. Toilets remained clean throughout and more importantly stocked with toilet paper! The guest area was a welcome retreat from the crowds and had a fantastic sheltered bar area. While the Press facilties were equally impressive offering a spacious media tent and lots of useful amenities including coffee (Thanks for that)!

Food was another pleasant surprise, prices are up for debate though. But quality wise top notch. Highlights of this for me have to be the loaded chips from the guest area, and the duck wrap I had on Sunday. Shoutout too to the Crumble place in District X.

When you combine all of this with the PayPal promotion of 20% off on food and drink value for money really was starting to look strong. I’ve always said if you worked out the cost of seeing the bands individually then the sheer entertainment value across the weekend is a compelling case for the price.

Friday: An Outstanding Start

Friday marked the beginning of the main festival and delivered some of the strongest performances of the weekend.

Caskets opened proceedings in impressive fashion on the Opus Stage. Despite an early slot and arena-entry queues affecting attendance, they delivered a confident set featuring highlights such as Glass Heart and Drowned In Emotion.

P.O.D. and Hollywood Undead kept energy levels high before Pendulum delivered one of the weekend’s most enjoyable crossover performances. Their blend of electronic music and rock continues to feel perfectly suited to Download, and tracks such as Halo demonstrated exactly why they remain such a popular booking. Even if I was disappointed no Matt Tuck this time.

Electric Callboy once again proved why they are rapidly becoming one of the most beloved bands on the festival circuit. Their set balanced humour, outfit changes and genuinely excellent musicianship, with We Got The Moves, Elevator Operator and Hypa Hypa all receiving huge reactions. Even newcomers to the band like our editor Cozzer loved it.

The biggest surprise of Friday, Feeder.

What could easily have been viewed as a nostalgic booking instead became one of the standout sets of the entire festival. Songs such as Feeling A Moment, Just A Day, Just The Way I’m Feeling and the inevitable Buck Rogers transformed the Avalanche tent into massive singalongs. Few artists generated as much pure joy across the weekend.

Limp Bizkit closed the day with their trademark blend of chaos and entertainment. While some (including myself) felt the pacing occasionally suffered due to extended breaks between songs, there was no denying the impact of hearing tracks such as Break Stuff, Rollin’ and Nookie reverberating across Donington once again. Also a small well done to the band for how well they dealt with someone getting hurt.

Saturday: New Discoveries and Fan Favourites

Saturday arrived with the site fully settled into festival mode and ready to hit the arena.

The Wildhearts provided an excellent start to the day, mixing classics with newer material in a performance that served as a reminder of their enduring appeal. It’ll be the last time they play Download and they marked it with a bang. And a dog!

The Wildhearts – I Wanna Go Where The People Go (All Rights Are Retained By The Wildhearts)

We actually stayed on Opus for a couple more bands, Dogstar were the one we were waiting for purely for one reason… Keanu Reeves. The man the myth the legend. Dogstar put on a decent enough set and if you’re a fan of Queens Of The Stone Age then you will love them!

Dogstar – Everything Turns Around (All Rights Are Retained By Dogstar)

One of Download’s greatest strengths has always been its ability to introduce audiences to new bands, and several artists seized that opportunity this year. Landmvrks impressed during the portion of their set we caught, while Texas newcomers Die Spitz absolutely tore through the Avalanche Tent with one of the most energetic performances of the weekend. We first heard of these via the Dingir Zu Prophet Show, so check those guys out!

The biggest discovery came from Return To Dust.

Having only recently discovered the band following the Download announcement, I added them to my must not miss category. Their grunge-influenced rock felt fresh and powerful. Despite being restricted to a short set on the smallest stage, they left a lasting impression and emerged as our personal band of the weekend. Tracks such as Belly Up and Bored sounded fantastic, while their cover of Hey Ya! was an unexpected highlight. These guys are going to be huge. I feel genuinely happy that I caught them at their first ever UK show.

Trivium once again demonstrated why they remain one of modern metal’s most reliable live acts. Matt Heafy’s vocals were in exceptional form, the band sounded enormous and the crowd responded accordingly. Every appearance seems to strengthen their case for a future Download headline slot. But before than can happen I think they need at least another two solid albums.

Trivium – In Waves (All Rights Are Retained By Trivium)

Elsewhere, Drowning Pool delivered exactly what fans wanted by playing Bodies, but the rest of their set felt unbelievably flat.

Architects looked set to produce one of the performances of the weekend before security interruptions disrupted the flow of their set. While frustrating at the time, reports from those who stayed suggested the band recovered strongly. I have to say though the singer did come across as a bit childish from where we were viewing from.

Architects – Blackhole (All Rights Are Retained By Architects)

Guns N’ Roses closed Saturday with perhaps the most debated performance of the festival. Musically, much of the set sounded excellent, and concerns surrounding Axl Rose’s vocals proved largely unfounded for the majority of the show. While questions remain regarding the lengthy slot allocation, hearing classics from one of rock’s most iconic bands remains a special experience. Paradise City cannot be their closer anymore though as Axl’s vocals can’t handle it after 3 hours. Please give him so high note support, only play the classics and start later! Leaving the arena at 10:15pm was so weird!

Guns N’ Roses – November Rain (All Rights Are Retained By Guns N’ Roses)

Sunday: The Future

By Sunday morning the familiar last day blues had begun to appear, but the final day ultimately delivered some of the strongest performances of the entire weekend.

Ego Kill Talent immediately grabbed our attention on the Opus Stage. Making their first UK appearance, the Brazilian group showcased an exciting blend of musicianship and charisma that suggests they will return in a far bigger slot next time.

Ego Kill Talent – Sublimated (All Rights Are Retained By Ego Kill Talent)

Bloodywood continued their rise with a huge performance that fused metal, rap and traditional Indian influences into one of the most distinctive sounds of the weekend. The crowd response suggested they are destined for bigger slots in the future too.

Bloodywood – Nu Delhi (All Rights Are Retained By Bloodywood)

The Pretty Reckless enjoyed vastly improved sound compared to previous appearances we’d seen, while Ice Nine Kills brought their signature horror-inspired spectacle and delivered one of Sunday’s most entertaining performances.

Then came Bad Omens.

Already carrying significant momentum, they somehow exceeded our expectations. Songs such as Just Pretend and The Death of Peace of Mind sounded enormous, and their performance reinforced the growing belief that they are future Download headliners. I give it 5 years maximum.

Linkin Park Deliver A Statement

If there was one performance that defined Download 2026, it was Linkin Park.

The return of the band has generated debate since Emily Armstrong joined the lineup, but by the time their headline set finished, there could be little doubt that Linkin Park remain a major force.

The newer material was where the band truly excelled. Heavy Is The Crown, The Emptiness Machine and Two Faced felt huge in the live environment and demonstrated that the next chapter of Linkin Park’s story is already well underway.

Linkin Park – Two Faced (All Rights Are Retained By Linkin Park)

No one will ever replace Chester Bennington, and certain songs inevitably carry an emotional weight that is impossible to replicate. Yet rather than attempting to recreate the past, this version of Linkin Park appears focused on building something new. Judging by the reaction from the Donington crowd, that future looks extremely bright.

More importantly, they delivered the strongest headline performance of the weekend and ensured Download 2026 ended on a genuine high.

I’ll finish this section with a small analogy. New Linkin Park is a Ferrari, just that the old songs with Chester was the same Ferrari with it’s limiter taken off it. Whereas when performing new material the band can slide around corners with ease.

Final Verdict

Download Festival 2026 might not have been flawless, but it felt like a festival that is moving with the times and maintaining it’s identity.

Expanded infrastructure, great facilities and improved camping experience to go with the strong line up. Contributed to one of the most enjoyable Download experiences that I can remember. There are however still lessons to learn about arena entry, security and stage placements. But these do not outweigh the considerable amount of great things I can say.

It once again proved why it is the spiritual home of rock and metal in the UK. Whether you come of established legends, future headliners or a brand new discovery. There is something for everyone.

From Return To Dust being out breakout band, Feeder’s unforgettable singalong and Linkin Park’s headliner performance. Download 2026 had created memories that will last for much longer than the wristbands will.

Finally a special note to LD Communications for providing both myself and Cozzer with press entry this year, we genuinely felt honoured and would love to do it again!
