Meatballs, Morris Dancing, and Nu-Core : A Chaos-Fueled Chat With Seething Akira

Introduction

What happens if you were to mix nu-metal’s aggression, chaos from electronic dance music and six guys from Portsmouth? Well you’d get Seething Akira and some seriously worrying Morris dancing.

Ever since their landmark album Cancel Estate they have been tearing up stages and stubbornly refusing to stay in a single musical lane. Their mission is to make people feel less alone and that’s one they achieve.

We talked with the band post Bloodstock Festival in an interview that is going to leave you out of breath, grab that inhaler and read along!

Interview

There are 6 of you! Would you mind introducing each other in the most ridiculous ways to our readers?

Proceeds to introduce each other using the power of Morris dancing, flailing wildly whilst maintaining aggressive eye contact.

Which band member is most likely to get lost in Ikea? More important which section?

Jordan (drummer) The smell of meatballs would lure him to whatever part of the store the meatballs are made. He would initially be lost, then thrive and raise a small but talented family of percussionists.

You’re known for your heavier songs, but I have to admit I adore “Reason To Breathe”(I’m a dad to a 2 year old). I want to know why do you do this? What keeps you going as musicians?

That’s the reason. All art is a dialogue. Whether performed on stage or in recording studio. It’s a conversation between creators and observers. We’re all looking to feel less alone. It’s a search for community and communion. “I feel like this – Do you feel like this?” – Also, Kit adores his daughter and being a dad.

You guys clearly know how to make bangers that get people moving. What bands you listened to growing up resulted in this mashup of sounds? (he says while dancing)

(Joins in the dancing) Everything from nu-metal bands like Deftones (pants) Linkin Park, electronic acts like (pants) The Prodigy and Pendulum, (panting loudly) rap acts like RATM, NWA and Biggie Smalls and pop-punk bands like Green Day and Blink (pants) 182 (reaches for an inhaler).

Your song Gravity is a personal favourite of mine. I’d love to know though if you discovered gravity rather than Newton… What would be falling on your head?

We’re from Portsmouth, so probably something been thrown from the balcony of a council estate. A pint glass, TV or cinder block.

I’m sure your stage setup requires a crazy amount of cable. Which member of the band is most likely to trip over a power lead mid set and plunge the venue into darkness?

Probably our bassist Spud. He’s probably the least technically minded, he wears the biggest boots and would be the most emotionally crushed at ruining a show. It would be pretty funny though.

You pack loads of energy into your tracks. If Seething Akira was hired to compose hold music for a tech support line. How long would it take for a customer to lose their mind? (For what it is worth I’d be praying to be put on hold)

That’s very sweet of you. It’s hard to say. I think it would take a while. A lot of our songs start with our singer/producer Charlie and they start out as musical compositions that are then adapted into songs. Their often pretty interesting and mercurial.

That being said, if you asked Charlie to write music that would drive people insane – probably between 6 and 7 seconds.

You have never stayed in a comfortable lane with your music. Was the constant evolution something that happened as part of a master plan , or is this blending of styles now second nature and it happens naturally?

SA: Somewhere in between. We all have varied musical tastes, so whatever we make is going to sound like an alloy; a merging of disparate elements.

In Cancel Estate we feel we hit the epitome of that style, we felt we had created something that was perfect Seething Akira. We’re now in the process of trying to develop that. We are now making a conscious effort to do something different with familiar elements under the umbrella of Seething Akira.

Which of your tracks do you think could act as the final boss battle song in a game?

Probably Dioxide. It’s a no nonsense banger that sounds very…fighty.

Would you be able to go into detail about what the song Punishment Instructions is about?

It’s a song about resisting control. Control through mass media, a job you hate or an abusive relationship. It’s about taking ownership of your life, raising your middle finger and telling those negative forces to go f*ck themselves.

It’s been a couple of years now since your last album “Cancel Estate”, when can fans expect a new one. Also how has sound of the band developed since that album came out?

Next year! We’re all in the process of writing right now. It’s still early days but we’re starting to break into and contribute in different writing teams. We’re also changing up the way we write, starting with a chorus first and working outwards. We’re hoping that the next release will something a little different.

If your tour van came to life and started its own rock band what would it’s project be called and would you let them open on tour for you?

If our tour van came to life the first and only thing it would do, would be to go into therapy.

If we were to interview you guys again in 5 years time what question would you want us to ask you? Bonus points, give us the answer for now and lets compare in 5 years ?

We absolutely love what we do. We hope that comes across in our live shows and our interactions with our supporters. We hope that in 5 years’ time, we love this just as much or more.

So we’d like the question to be:

“You 6 always seem so happy on stage, what do you do to keep that enthusiasm?”
